BB interviewed some of the speakers for this event to ask their opinions on current topics.
Here's what they had to say.

Jonathan joined the Environment Agency when it was formed in 1996 as the WRA was moved from the county to the Agency. He has worked on risk assessment of developed closed landfill sites, landfill engineering and environmental control enforcement on licenced sites, and a variety of contaminated land projects.

What do you predict will be major brownfield issues in 2020?
• Dealing with diffuse pollution into rivers from contaminated sediments adjacent to historic riverside uses.
• Reducing gas/groundwater emissions and stability issues from historic mines.
• Reducing fugitive gas emissions from old closed landfills to reduce climate change impacts

What do you think are the three biggest brownfield developments/achievements from this year?
• Olympics megasite – MTL and Recovery licences at their best
• Radio-wave in-situ ground treatment to reduce hydrocarbons
• Phase 1 of the Soils Code of Practice

If you could change one piece of legislation/regulation what would it be and why?
• Ensure environmental crime faced stiffer penalties to get rid of the cowboys and allow those who promote best practice and innovative techniques to deal with land contamination a true level playing field.
• Continue to improve the Modern Regulation Approach
