Thermal treatment

Treatment involving the use of heat to remove or destroy contaminants, but at differing temperatures and with diverse equipment, depending on the chemistry.

It is mostly used for organic, volatile contaminants that can be changed into the gaseous state by heating, and then the gases treated separately - thermal desorption at lower temperatures or incineration at higher levels (fixed plant only). At extremely high temperatures, the soil contaminants can be vitrified in place. Normally done off site, but can now be done in-situ.
