Senior Risk Assessor / Toxicologist

Atkins Water and Environment business have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Human Health Risk Assessor/Toxicologist.

The position will be based in the London or Epsom office and would report to the Director of Land Quality and Regeneration and work collaboratively with other technical specialists and businesses within Atkins. 

The suitable candidate will work in our Environment business to support UK and international land contamination and environmental engineering projects.

You will have key experience in leading human health risk assessments with supplemental experience of toxicology, including derivation of health criteria values (HCVs) using a hierarchical toxicological evidence base and application within the scope of Part 2A and land contamination guidance.

Strong ethos in developing conceptual models using the Source-Pathway-Receptor methodology and experience in applying a wide range of risk assessment tools and statistical analysis.



Requirements
  • BSc and MSc degrees in Environmental Science, Hydrogeology/Geology and/or Science 2.1 achievement or better.
  • Formal training in toxicological principals, research and application tpo land contamination.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and a track record for implementation of toxicological research and Health Criteria Values to human health risk assessment.
  • Exposure to industry initiatives for derivation of generic human health assessment criteria (through EIC, SoBRA or others).
  • Derived site-specific human health risk assessment criteria for land contamination projects. Sound knowledge and understanding of detailed quantitative risk assessment for controlled waters, ecological, property, vapour and gas risks.
  • Detailed experience in fate and transport of metals, inorganic and organic compounds in the environment. Good contaminated land experience (Phase 1 through Phase 3 remediation implementation, including site work).
  • Project-lead experience and have input to Client and Regulator meetings.
  • Proven experience working with a wide range of clients and market sectors;
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Familiar with relevant codes of practice and industry standards, and have good broad understanding of environmental legislation (e.g. the CLEA model, SR2 and SR3).
  • Be able to work and travel throughout the UK and overseas, and willing to work on short assignments overseas.
  • Confident in field based work, including the need to carry out lone working.
  • CSCS card for site work (resident or visiting).


Responsibilities
  • Reviewing and preparing human health detailed quantitative risk assessments.
    Leading technical research into toxicological input parameters for novel contaminants, proposing HCVs and assessing fit to Significant Possibility of Significant Harm (SPOSH) for Part 2A sites.
  • Data management and assessment including interpretation of test results with detailed knowledge of statistical assessment of chemical data.
  • Leading land contamination projects, including scheduling and managing work to acceptable quality, on time and to budget.
  • Preparation of commercial offers, including budget forecasts with integrated knowledge of environmental, infrastructure and land development projects.
  • Reporting and presenting complex interpretative results to clients and other parties clearly.
  • Working with the wider team in advancing projects to the highest standard.
  • Mentoring and training junior staff in human health risk assessment and toxicology.
  • Preparing and giving external training courses to regulators, private clients and consultants.
