CIRIA has started work on a collaborative project to develop good practice guidance on management, post-abandonment aftercare and development of abandoned mine working sites.
The new publication will also cover site investigation, mining investigation, consolidation of old workings, remedial measures and foundation design options and will be designed to supersede Construction Over Abandoned Mineworkings (SP32) which dates from 1984.
To prepare for the 18-month project, CIRIA is currently undertaking consultations and is seeking case studies for inclusion.
The project is funded by the Coal Authority, DEFRA, East Midlands Development Agency, Health &Safety Executive, Homes & Communities Agency, Network Rail, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Welsh Assembly Government.
