Blackpool Pleasure Beach (Holdings) Ltd has been fined £6,000 at Blackpool Magistrates for six separate offences of failing to recover and recycle packaging waste produced on its sites.

It also paid £2,631 in fines and £9,130 compensation for the offences, dating back as far as 1997, which were brought against it by the Environment Agency.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach failed to register as a producer of packaging waste under the Packaging Regulations, despite producing such waste from its hotels and other sources. It also failed to meet requirements to recover and recycle it.

Claire Balmer from the Agency said: "The regulations are in place to encourage a reduction in the amount of packaging used by business and to decrease the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. Although these regulations have been in force since 1997 many businesses still ignore or remain unaware of their responsibilities."

The Agency said it is urging all businesses to check if packaging regulations apply to them, as those who do not fulfil their obligations under the regulation risk fines of £15,000 per year.
