Environmental Protection UK has elected former Conservative MEP and European Parliament environment committee chair Caroline Jackson to be its new president.
The charity has also appointed James Grugeon, who joins from his own Low Carbon Enterprise business, as chief executive.
Dr Jackson has extensive experience on the environment, through chairing the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Protection Committee for 10 years from 1994, and was rapporteur for important legislation including the landfill and waste framework directives.
She is currently chair of the Board of Trustees at the Institute for European Environment Policy.
"I am pleased to be joining Environmental Protection UK as its president at a time when compliance with legislation designed to protect our environment is more important than ever," she said.
"Because it works with environmental protection professionals in local authorities, government, academia and the business community it is able to influence and effect positive action and ensure that important legislation and regulation does what it is supposed to - protect the environment."
Mr Grugeon's previous experience includes work in business including corporate affairs with a high street bank, advising government on fuel poverty and directing corporate affairs for Eaga. He was also managing director of Cool Nrg.
"Environmental Protection UK has a long and proud history of leadership on protecting the environment," he said.
"This is an exciting and challenging time to be taking on this role. I am looking forward to working with our trustees, our members, our team and our new president - who brings a wealth of experience - to build on our achievements to date and take the organisation forward as the recognised leader on environmental protection in the UK and wider EU."
