London mayor Boris Johnson has approved plans for 750 new homes plus leisure and commercial buildings to be built on a former industrial site next to the Thames Barrier.

Barrier Park East will be built on the 4.6ha vacant brownfield site, owned by the London Development Agency, Barratt Homes and Taylor Wimpey, and will include green communal spaces and children's play areas.

Mr Johnson said: "I am confident that as more of this part of the capital is developed, and as the Docklands Light Railway is extended under the river to Woolwich, the transformation and future regeneration of the east and south east of London is assured."
