Glasgow City Council has ordered a temporary stop to work on the site of the new National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome for further testing following the discovery of asbestos in soil during site investigations.
The new national venues, which will also form part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games facilities, are to be built on former industrial sites near the Clyde at Dalmarnock in Glasgow's east end.
Earlier investigations had suggested moderate levels of contamination and the Council has been working with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency on risks to the water environment.
However, site enabling works were put on hold following the discovery of what the Council describes as "minute traces" of asbestos in the soil. It says further tests will now take place and it is hopeful of getting work restarted on the sites in the near future.
