Huge landfill fire continues to burn

Fire fighters from Dublin, Kildare, Laois and Wicklow have been fighting an underground fire in a landfill site at Kerdiffstown in County Kildare from which a plume of smoke has been drifting for several miles.

The Health Service Executive has been advising local people and schools to avoid the plume and stay indoors with windows and doors shut whenever the smoke comes near.

The Irish Environmental Protection Agency has been monitoring air quality and dismantling, segregation and treatment has been carried out using thermal imaging equipment, fire suppression techniques and earth-moving.

But a statement on 31 January indicated it was expected the fire would still be burning in a week's time.
