Kirklees’ core strategy nibbles at green belt

Kirklees Borough Council has published a revised core strategy for consultation which proposes to build 27,900 new homes over the next 18 years, with less than half (12,350) on brownfield sites and 3,600 on green belt land.

Earlier consultations showed a preference to concentrate new homes around Huddersfield and Dewsbury, but local people were less enthusiastic about a strategy to reduce climate change by locating jobs and homes close to one another.

The draft core strategy therefore concentrates on the two towns but, because many areas of Dewsbury are prone to flooding, the Council proposes to release a substantial greenfield, green belt area south of the town for sprawl housing.

"Making land available here means that we can create new communities who will use the town centre and its shops and facilities which will support our wider plans for regenerating Dewsbury," says the Council.
