MPs to probe light rail barriers

A cross-party body of MPs is to look into why development and implementation of tram systems still takes much longer and costs more in the UK than it does in Europe or elsewhere.

The All-Party Parliamentary Light Rail Group will be backed by the PTE Group will mount the select-committee style inquiry into barriers to tram development in the UK to see what the barriers are and why the UK has so few schemes.

"Although we have seen some tram schemes approved and delivered - with all the benefits that has brought - others have spent year after year stuck in the appraisal process," said PTEG chair Neil Scales.

"We believe now is the right time to take stock of UK light rail policy."

The inquiry is calling for written evidence and will hold hearings during the autumn.
