National Trust says change is now irresistible

The National Trust, a key opponent of the Government's planning reforms, says the MPs' report creates irresistible pressure on DCLG to make significant improvements to its Draft NPPF.

Director-general Dame Fiona Reynolds warmly welcomed the report and said DCLG must now make significant improvements.

She noted 230,000 people had signed the Trust's petition and the Committee had identified the clear changes needed to deliver a planning system that balances social and environmental needs with those of the economy.

"We are delighted to see that many of the improvements we suggested are reflected in the CLG Committee's report," she said.

"The report makes direct reference to the prime minister's letter to us, in which he stated that there was no intention to change the purpose of planning. DCLG now needs to produce a National Planning Policy Framework which makes good these intentions. We will be watching closely, and testing the final version of the NPPF against the select committee's recommendations as well as our own suggestions for changes."
