New Motherwell investigation underway

North Lanarkshire Council is beginning 16 weeks of new sampling at the site adjoining Forum Place and Tiber Avenue in Motherwell where residents believe contamination is threatening their health.

The Council says that, although it has received no further communications from residents who made the claims or the lawyer who represented them earlier this year, it wants to resolve the issues.

Boreholes will be dug over a three-day period and gas and groundwater sampled.

"Because there has been a lot of publicity about this site, which has raised considerable fears among some residents, we want to be sure they are told in advance that we are carrying out this work, and that they are aware that it is a continuation of our initial investigation, not a new project," said pollution control manager Charles Penman.

"We have received no further communications from either the residents who made the initial claims about contamination, or from the lawyer who represented them earlier this year. However, we want to resolve this situation for everyone concerned, and this plan is our best means of doing so."

The work will be carried out by WSP Environment & Energy and will aim to validate historical remediation and validation on the open space adjoining the residential area, to characterise the materials comprising and underlying the mounded area west of Forum Place and to make recommendations for any remedial measures needed.

No sampling of residential soils is proposed at this stage.
