South Tyneside Borough Council has agreed to go ahead with its plans for New Shore Park, an area of open space running from the ferry landing to the Customs House.

The Council and One North East have already committed £4.29m to redevelopment of the Harton Staithes site and £1.29m of that will be spent on the park; the money is part of the £12.08m from the regional development agency and £1.65m from the Council for the South Shields Riverside proposals.

"We have a once in a lifetime chance to create something that will have a tremendous impact on the Harton Staithes area and the New Shore Park development will do just that," said Council lead member for jobs, enterprise and regeneration Michael Clare.

The park will be designed to give public access to the Tyne and provide a setting for the proposed business centre and catering facilities. A detailed design competition is due this summer and work is due to start next year.

"We welcome the development of the New Shore Park as part of the overall regeneration of Harton Staithes, which will support the creation of new jobs and businesses in South Tyneside," said ONE director of capital development David Cramond.
