The new South Downs national park has become a reality with the signing of the confirmation order by environment secretary Hilary Benn.

The area stretches from Eastbourne to Winchester and includes the clay High Weald area as well as the chalk downs. It includes the Forestry Commission's Alice Holt site in Hampshire and Green Ridge in Brighton.

"The unique chalk downlands and heavy weald clay landscapes which make up this wonderful countryside will now be protected for everyone to enjoy.," said Mr Benn. "National park status will attract new visitors to the South Downs and bring investment into the local area."

A new South Downs National Park Authority is to be created by next April and to become fully operational a year later.

"National parks are a huge walking asset, offering myriad walking opportunities," said Ramblers Association chief executive Tom Franklin. "The South Downs is on the doorstep of millions of people and this decision will safeguard it for future generations."
