The first 50 homes on Stockton on Tees’ 23ha Northshore scheme have received planning permission from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.

This will see the first homes on the 3.4ha Muse Developments’ home zone part of the site.

Northshore, which is mostly owned by the Homes & Communities Agency, is eventually intended to yield nearly 1,000 homes.

“The HCA has already invested over £20m on site remediation and preparing the area, providing a platform for future developments, and will consider an application for funding from the Kickstart programme next month,” said Agency regional director Pat Ritchie.

The masterplan was agreed in August and also includes offices, shops, hotels, catering, leisure and a new University of Durham campus.

The overall Northshore scheme, led by Tees Valley Regeneration, the Council, the HCA and One North East, aims to create 4,500 new jobs in addition to homes.

“This is the first major element of the scheme to begin but there are many other exciting plans for the site, all of which will transform an underused pocket of prime riverside land into a thriving mixed-use development, bringing with it jobs and investment,” predicted TVR director of development Richard Buckley.
