Planning consent has been obtained by Regal Property Group for a 56-storey tower block in Birmingham which will become the highest structure in the area.

The 192m tower block will contain flats, a hotel and shops.

"This meets with Birmingham's ambitions to be a world class city and will be a landmark building on a gateway site," said Peter Weatherhead of DTZ.

Birmingham City Council's planning committee rejected objections that it would be too tall and, as it would be close to other towers, would create traffic congestion.
