Scottish compost trials underway

A series of two-year trials is underway in Scotland using PAS 100 compost for a variety of uses including soil improvement and establishing woodland and biomass crops on brownfield land.

The trials are being run for the Waste & Resources Action Programme by Forestry Commission Scotland, the Scottish Agricultural College and others using compost made from garden and food waste.

At the Dalquhandy opencast site in Lanarkshire, the Commission and Scottish Coal will use the compost to establish woodland while the SAC will look at using a brownfield site near Colinsburgh to grow energy crops.

"These latest trials will bring about an even greater understanding of quality compost - and illustrate to those tasked with managing landscaping and regeneration projects that they can make cost savings and still work in an environmentally sustainable way," said WRAP director for Scotland Iain Gulland.
