Ten pence a tyre

Storing 20,000 scrap tyres on an unlicensed site has brought Douglas Milby, director of Southern Tyre Disposals, a £2,000 fine at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency warned him that storing the tyres at his Biggar Mill site in Dalbeattie was an offence in January 2007 but an enforcement notice issued four months later had no effect and the tyres were still there at the beginning of this year.

"The continued operation of the site without a licence, increases the potential for harm to the environment and human health," said SEPA investigating officer Susan Law. "In addition, Mr Milby has avoided paying the disposal costs incurred by licensed businesses."
