Tesco has obtained planning permission for its new supermarket, district centre, hotel, school, employment space and 454 flats scheme at Bromley-by-Bow from the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation.
The Corporation has used its powers to secure comprehensive development of the 6ha industrial site and the first phase is due for completion by 2012.
"As a result of LTGDC's efforts and unique strengths we have unlocked a site that other players would have walked away from, and indeed did," said Corporation development director Steve Oakes.
"The vital role we played in shaping planning policy and the innovative way we applied our powers to leverage in private sector investment, is a tool we are set to deploy throughout the southern Olympic fringe."
The LTGDC decides applications for more than 50 homes, 2,500m² of business space, one hectare and 25m high.
