A group of planning and property organisations and government bodies has set up a project on the economics of development to show why failure to understand viability is inhibiting schemes.
The project, backed by DCLG and eight other bodies, will be carried out by Roger Tym and Partners and will aim to provide planners, local authority members etc. with better understanding of developers' attitudes to risk and return and factors inhibiting viability of developments.
"This certainly is a worthwhile and timely project and one that POS is pleased to fully support," said Planning Officers' Society past president Phil Kirby.
"The audience could be twofold - planning officers who will require a more technical insight, and local authority members providing a general level of understanding how development economics works."
The study will identify who needs what training and how it could best be provided and it was backed in the pre-budget report.
