Urban design revolution urged

Population rise and climate change demand a re-evaluation of our priorities and objectives in urban design and transport, former Government chief scientific advisor Sir David King has told planners.

Delivering the Royal Town Planning Institute's David Fryer Memorial Lecture in Oxford, Sir David told the planners that, with climate change and the global population set to climb to nine billion, every government must put in place measures for huge reductions in carbon dioxide emissions while simultaneously managing inflation, maintaining employment and improving well-being.

"It is my contention that this (expected increase in population) demands a re-evaluation, at all levels of our societies, of our priorities, our aims, and our objectives," he said.

"But this demand for a true paradigm shift - a cultural change - has not yet entered the mainstream of our political, cultural and private sector thinking."
