The States of Jersey has awarded a £5.2m contract to VHE for remediation of the 1.3ha former gas works in St Helier and construction of its new Millennium Town Park.
The first stage of the project will involve excavation and treatment of around 2,000m³ of contaminated material using biophysical segregation and separation and reuse during construction of the park.
A further 1,700m³ too heavily contaminated for on-site treatment will be taken by barge to a specialist processing facility in Holland for cleansing and reuse for cinder blocks for building.
VHE will also strip and crush the existing car park surface and hardcore base and transport it to La Collette reclamation area as part of the reclamation of the St Helier foreshore for future development.
Clean fill will be imported to allow construction of the park, which includes water features, sheltered relaxation areas, a children's play area and sports facilities, to proceed.
