Will the trees capture carbon?

The Forestry Commission is seeking views on a draft Code of Good Practice for Forest Carbon Projects which gives advice on the best way to plant trees on sites to capture carbon.

Carbon capture is widely touted as a reason for tree planting but there are no current uniform standards for forest carbon capture and the Code aims to provide uniform standards.

"It will provide the clarity and quality assurance that people are looking for," said director-general Tim Rollinson. Comments are needed by 14 September.

"This Code is not about trying to tree-plant our way out of trouble. Woodland creation can make a valuable and very visible contribution as one of the full range of carbon-reduction actions that must be taken to prevent catastrophic climate change."
